Street Detectives

Y2 Newsletter (Spr 1) Street Detectives >

This half term the children the children travelled back in time to see what life was like in the past with a focus on houses, toys and transport. The children even created their own questions to ask Mrs Philps when they interviewed her about what life was like when she was a child.

As part of the topic the children learnt about different aspects of the streets such as road signs and buildings. One of the activities that the children really enjoyed was a project where they designed and created their own buildings with a partner. They worked together to choose the materials they were going to use and build their model. The literacy work the children have been doing this term has been based on the book ‘The hodgeheg’ where a hedgehog goes on a mission to find a way to cross a road and along the way encounters different street elements. The children have explored the plot of this story and then wrote their own version of a wishing tale.

To conclude our topic and to allow children to put into practice what they had learnt, we embraced the cold and went on a walk around Blaby to look at and explore the streets and different buildings. The children were able to spot things that they had learnt about over the topic and enjoyed identifying things that they saw. They spotted the different types of buildings that were in Blaby, the materials that the various houses were made of and identified the similarities and differences between the buildings.
